Question 12v12 = alliance battles? i dont get it

Why are 12 v 12 battles referred to as alliance battles? As far as I know your alliance has nothing to do with it. You arnt fighting as your alliance (you can only make a group of 4 and they dont have to be from your alliance). It can be 12 people from 12 different alliances on the Luxon side vs 12 people from 12 different alliances on the Kurzick side. Shouldnt 12v12 be called Faction battles or something? I dunno, maybe I'm just an idiot or have missed some crucial bit of information...

PS, i know there is a forum for questions, but as this only has to do with factions... I figured people who know more about factions would be more likely to read it if I posted here

Not sure, but my guess is that you are forming an alliance with others on your side for this particular battle? Therefore called "alliance battles"...

I'm probably wrong

The "rumored" new format is player made groups of 4, matched with other player groups of 4 from your Alliance, or at least your Faction.

From the new 12vs12 writeup on the main site,

While you can pick your own team and deal with your own objectives, you will have two other teams that are randomly assigned.

So it looks like they will be from your Faction, but not from your Alliance, so I'd agree with the OP that calling them Alliance battles is confusing.

Maybe the original idea was to make up three teams from from three guilds within an Alliance, and that got changed but the name stuck

They loosely use the term alliance, as in both meaning a guild alliance and the factions. So you fight for the faction you are allied to, thus alliance battles.
And in the FPE, you could do like random arena. So it could be 3 organised groups of 4, or 6 of 2, or even 12 of 1. Whatever you please. You do not need to get a full 4 person team to enter.

I think that article about 12v12 on the main site was based on the FPE format, and I do remember ANet saying something about the grouping being different.

I thought the Random thing worked horribly - lots of people going in solo and even griefing. Not only not helping the fight but suiciding and giving points to the other side throughout the match.

Otherwise I really enjoyed these fights. Hopefully they have something in place to reduce if not knock out this type of play.

i thought the only reason that the other 2 teams were random in the preview event was because you couldn't form alliances?

ANet is pretty notorious for being very bad with names. Just chalk up another confusing name that will let you get Faction points with Kurzick when fighting for the Kurzick Faction when playing Guild Wars: Factions.

they are called that way so it sounds good, it's psyclological. i mean would u have been excited about it if it was named "Random Teams Arena"? all i can say about "alliance battles" is that they're sad. i've seen ppl just afk in there for a few faction points...
